Letting go of sentimental items can be hard. I remember in 2016 when Marie Kondo told us during our KonMari Consultant Training course that she had only just finished decluttering her photos, I let out a sigh of relief! Getting through all our nostalgic items can take a long time. Kate takes us through what it has been like wading through years of sentimental items – and how lockdown was the perfect opportunity.

This has been the most time-consuming declutter I have ever done. Mainly because for the first time I have actually had that time and space. I essentially transferred all of my sentimental paper into my parents’ spare room (a luxury I definitely don’t have in the city!) and worked on it over a period of about six weeks. I think I needed that time – it’s obviously emotionally exhausting decluttering nostalgic items – so being able to stop and come back to it a few days later was helpful.

I realised that having a historical record of my life is something I highly value.

One unexpected find was my childhood scrapbooks. I have about six or seven which I hadn’t looked at in probably about two decades. I assumed they would be just full of rubbish so I thought I’d have no difficulty chucking them. Actually though, I’ve kept them all.

One of them turned out to contain the only birthday cards I ever received from my grandfather before he died when I was 10.

You might think you’re satisfied living in a mess, but believe it or not, being disorganised can come at a cost. For example, research shows that clutter affects our anxiety levels, sleep, and ability to focus. Still not convinced? Here are six key costs of living a disorganised life.

Our brains like order, and constant visual reminders of disorganisation such as a messy desk or piles of paperwork on the kitchen bench drain our cognitive resources, reducing our ability to focus.

Visual distraction in the form of clutter sends our brain into overdrive and can reduce our ability to process information, but clearing clutter from our homes has proven to increase our ability to focus and be productive.

2. Clutter can affect your mental health

Most of us have a vague understanding that clutter makes us feel stressed, but now we have evidence to prove that it does actually stress us out. Scientists at the University of California have found that being surrounded by too many things increases the body’s level of the stress hormone cortisol, increasing susceptibility to depression, insomnia and anxiety. When reviewing the home environment of mothers, they discovered that cortisol was higher in mothers living in a cluttered environment.

In short, clutter induces a negative mindset, reduces motivation and diminishes happiness.

On the other hand, living and working in an organised environment, where each item has a home, eliminates the need to search for lost items, and makes cleaning and all round living simpler.

People who sleep in cluttered bedrooms are more likely to have sleeping problems, both in terms of falling asleep and waking up during the night. There is a lot to be said for tidying up before you go to bed – a clean floor will not only make the space feel calmer, but will aid in the ease of sleep.

The bonus of tidying up at night is that you will also set yourself up for the day ahead as you wake up to a clean room in the morning. Read Your Sleep Sanctuary Nighttime Rituals for more sleep support.

Without further ado, here are six of the best ways you can make your home more sustainable, starting now.

While reducing and reusing is better, recycling is still important. Up to 96% of Australian kerbside recycling is made into new products. However, in Australia large volumes of recycled materials still end up in landfill due to contamination. This is also the primary reason China stopped accepting our recycling exports. So be sure to wash out any remaining food and always pop jars, cans, bottles and paper in the recycle bin loose, never in a plastic bag.

Still not sure how to recycle? Read up on Planet Ark’s Golden Recycling Rules.

If you own your home, investing in efficient reverse cycle air conditioners, double glazing and shade protection is ideal. If structural changes are not an option, make sure you do your part by closing the blinds in summer and throwing on an extra blanket in winter. As nice as it might be to sleep under a doona with the air conditioner on full blast, this habit is doing the environment no favours.

As a bonus, you’ll probably save a load of money on your energy bill too.

Well, animals raised for meat require large lots of land to grow their feed, fertilizers to make the feed grow rapidly and room to graze. This need for land and resources makes meat production the largest driver of Amazon deforestation, accounting for 80% of clearing. In fact, one third of the Earth’s surface is used for meat, and emissions related to meat production are almost double those for fruit, veg and legumes.

It’s generally agreed that clothing is the easiest category to declutter. So why is it that so many of us struggle to reduce our wardrobes? After all, I stopped clothes shopping for fun in my twenties, and have been stripping back my wardrobe for years, yet somehow clothes still make up a big part of my possessions.

However, I recently let go of the following five things out of my wardrobe, and I feel a lot lighter. If you’re looking for a place to start with your wardrobe declutter, might I suggest you join me? You won’t miss those ‘must-haves’ (that you secretly don’t like), or that ill-fitting bra. Trust me, it’s time to let go of…

For me, it’s a pair of handmade, Brooklyn-designed pants that cost $500 but I’ve only worn a handful of times. Anything in your wardrobe that screams ‘you really should wear me more’, but doesn’t bring you joy – get rid of it.

Switched jobs and no longer need your old work outfits? Discard. Happily settled into a relationship with no need for that skimpy, first date dress? Discard. Done with clubbing and no longer wear your six-inch podium heels? Consider discarding.

Remember, intentional decluttering is more than just getting rid of some stuff. It is about reassessing how your clothes are making you feel and whether they add value to your life. It’s time to let go of anything that hasn’t grown with you.

Fluctuating body weight can present difficulties, so if this is you, take Courtney Carver’s advice: box up and put away anything that doesn’t fit right now, and bring it back out when it does. I truly believe that there is no need to keep anything in your wardrobe because you’ve been told that it is a ‘must-have’ basic or a staple. When we buy items based on how they look on a model in a magazine, or seasonal trends or for a ‘feel good boost’, we are not really dressing according to our own style. Of course, finding your own style can take time, and there is no need to pressure yourself. But I can guarantee if you dress to look like someone else you will feel like someone else, and no one is better than you.

Minimalism is often undoubtedly more extreme than the KonMari method. Some minimalists may let go of objects which many of us find hard to do, such as photos, heirlooms, and sentimental items.

So let’s start now.

Here are simple steps to buy less and reduce your carbon footprint:

1. Know what sparks joy for you.

Everywhere we turn there someone is trying to sell us something to fix a problem we didn’t know we had. Last year Facebook made $16.6 billion through adds. Targeted advertising algorithms are improved daily. If you don’t know what products make you happy, google will tell you.

A strong understanding of what you feel good wearing, and what products work for your lifestyle, helps to keep you true to yourself; not to be swayed by advertising. Get clear on your values, stay honest and say no to anything that doesn’t align to that.

2. Understand when you are being sold to.

We are creatures of comfort, and wonderful at convincing ourselves (and others) that we are desperately in need of more. A new contraption to make life easier, (because it was so hard before). A new product to make us prettier, smarter, stronger or more efficient. Everything from study journals to lightweight socks are marketed to us; with clever advertising telling us that what we have now is not good enough.

Before purchasing the latest technology or the newest model, ask yourself, do I truly need this or am I being sold a need that I don’t have?

3. Cultivate self awareness.

Why are you buying; Is it emotive? A result of social pressures? Are you lacking something?

I have moved 12 times in 10 years, including hemispheres on more than one occasion. Crazy? Maybe, but I can honestly say one type of change I am okay with is changing my space. Packing, moving and setting up a new home is my jam. And now, as a KonMari Consultant downsizing is easy. So I am sharing my top downsizing tips!

1. Reduce before you move.

In an interview with Domain.com.au I was shocked by how many people reduce when they arrive in a new home. Decluttering before moving means; you have less to relocate; less to stress over, and your home is more presentable for sale or inspection.

2. Set an intention.

Before embarking on a downsizing journey take a moment to ask yourself why. What are your reasons, what are you working towards? It could be that you want less to put away after your family (I hear this often from stay-at-home and part-time parents). Maybe you’re sick of lugging bags and want to travel lighter. Whatever your intention, actively bring it front of mind through the downsizing process.

3. Recognise when you are off track.

Moving is stressful, you will come off track from time to time. There is a likelihood at some point you will be frazzled in a sea of boxes fighting off mini breakdowns (basically my first overseas move experience). These moments are “decluttering danger zones”, when we can quickly fall into a discarding frenzy, overwhelmed with the experience and throw out too much. Only to regret our discards the next day and buy back items from charity stores! Watch yourself, enjoy the process and come back to your intention.

4. Own your Joy.

Decluttering decisions are to be made by you, no one else. No one can tell you how an item Sparks Joy for you, I can coach you through the process but I can’t make you feel something. Some of the strangest things give us joy, own it. Who cares what others think; if you love it, keep it. When downsizing a whole family, you will all need to be respectful of other’s joy. In preparation, take a look in your pantry, are there items you can “use up” now? Check your dry foods for ingredients you can use in this year’s festive bake-up. Items like glacé fruit, flours and cooking brandy don’t really go off so don’t be scared to use them up rather than throwing them out. The less food waste the better!

Kondo’s unique method is not focused on throwing away or creating minimal homes, it’s about finding joy and being grateful for what we have. While maybe a little woo-hoo for those of us not spiritually inclined, decluttering this way forces us to be honest with ourselves. The KonMari Method urges us to recognise when we have changed; when our ideologies, tastes and desires have shifted, encouraging us to accept and let go items that no longer serve us. Applying the KonMari method is a great starting point in the process of morphing your home into your personal sanctuary.
